Experts see strong DDoS attacks on telecoms in January

MOSCOW, Feb 26 (PRIME) – The number of DDoS attacks on Russian telecom companies soared by 38% on the month and 8% on the year in January, an official at cybersecurity firm StormWall told PRIME on Friday.

Hackers targeted small Internet providers, hosting providers, and small data centers, which lack sufficient resources to resist DDoS attacks, the official said, adding that the attacks became stronger.

StormWall explained the trend by the appearance of a new botnet that perpetrators sell via messenger Telegram for U.S. $500 a week. It can be used to organize an attack with a capacity of 300–400 Gbit/s.

StormWall believes the number and strength of DDoS attacks will continue to rise in 2021, and the telecom companies should think of more effective means of protection of their online resources.
